The Danube Limes

The Danube Limes

Romans occupied Carnuntum (Austria) and Sirminium (Serbia) in A.D. I-st century, during the reign of Claudius (A.D. 41-54), and then occupied the western part of Hungary, thus the frontiers were pushed onward tot the Danube. The ancient Roman Army settled on the Danube at the end of A.D. I-st century. The Danube frontier lasted approximately 400 years, until the barbarian invasion. On this new natural frontier of the Roman Empire, castra, fortresses, watchtowers and civilian settlements were built.

The Danube Limes extends from Germany, Austria and crosses Croatia, Serbia, Slovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania until it reaches the Black Sea.
